FDA Update on Recall of Peanut-Containing Products
A combination of epidemiological analysis and laboratory testing by state officials in Minnesota and Connecticut, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have enabled FDA to confirm that the sources of the outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Typhimurium are peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant.

Another Salmonella Peanut Butter Outbreak - "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Five months after the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak began, and nearly three weeks after the Minnesota Department of Health “spilled the beans” that tainted peanut butter was the vector, the public still has little idea why nearly 500 became ill with over 125 hospitalized and 11 deaths. Now, Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) has shuttered its doors and the town of Blakely, Georgia is reconsidering itself as “Peanut Capital of the World.”

Recalls issued for salmonella contamination
Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. today announced that genetic testing on the 5-lb unopened tub of King Nut peanut butter found by food inspectors last week at a West Haven distributor has produced the first independently confirmed genetic match for the salmonella strain responsible for the nationwide outbreak. This finding definitively links the peanut butter sample implicated in the recent outbreak back to the manufacturer, Peanut Corporation of America.

State health officials today announced Peanut Corporation of America, a peanut processing company that makes peanut butter for bulk distribution to institutions, food service industries and private label food companies, is voluntarily recalling peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Ga., processing facility because of possible contamination with Salmonella. None of the peanut butter being recalled is sold directly to consumers through retail stores.

As part of its ongoing strategy to address the present problem with melamine contamination of consumer products exported from the People’s Republic of China, FDA has expanded its import controls on Chinese dairy products, and food and feed products manufactured in China that contain dairy ingredients. Since Oct. 10, 2008, FDA has had an import alert in place for specific products found contaminated with melamine and melamine-related compounds. FDA has collected additional information on the scope of the melamine contamination problem in China, and determined a countrywide import alert is warranted.
