Editor's note:

FDA updated on July 26 the ongoing recall of chili products due to possible contamination of Clostridium botulinum.  As of July 21, 2007, four cases of botulism have been reported to CDC, two from Indiana and two from Texas, the CDC reported.  All four persons claimed to have used Castleberry’s brand Hot Dog Chili Sauce Original.  And botulinum toxin was found in leftover chili sauce from an unlabeled sealable bag collected from a patient’s refrigerator.  Botulism is a potentially fatal foodborne illness.  Please read the following for the complete list of chili products being recalled.

Chili Products (Botulism) Recall
(Includes Canned Chili, Stew, Hash, BBQ, Gravy, and Pet Food Products)
Updated: July 26, 2007

Introduction

FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain canned food products or to serve certain dog food produced by Castleberry's Food Company of Augusta, Ga., due to possible botulism contamination. Botulism can be fatal.

Castleberry's is recalling all of the potentially contaminated products and is cooperating with FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service and the states' investigations into the cause of contamination. The list of recalled products includes cans of hot dog chili sauce, various types of dog food, chili with meat, corned beef hash, and a number of other products.

How Do I Remove/Dispose of Recalled Products Due to Botulism Hazard?

Consumers who have any of these products or any foods made with these products should throw them away immediately. Double bag the cans in plastic bags that are tightly closed then place in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash outside of the home. Additional instructions for safe disposal can be found at www.cdc.gov/botulism/botulism_faq.htm .

Retailers and foodservice establishments should isolate recalled products from other stock and secure and tag for pick-up or disposal as directed by Castleberry's or their designee. Do not puncture or otherwise open cans prior to disposal. Disposal must be done in accordance with State and local regulations and ordinances and in a manner that will prevent diversion of the recalled products. Recalled products should not be disposed of by placing them in unsecured garbage cans, dumpsters or other receptacles in a manner that could result in subsequent removal by individuals for their own use or for sale to others.

Particular care should be used when handling and disposing of cans that show signs of swelling or leakage to prevent any human exposure to the contents of the cans.
