– The Corn Refiners Association today applauded a federal ruling that rejected a claim that products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) cannot be labeled natural.
The decision, issued on
June 13, 2008 by U.S. District Court Judge Mary Cooper, holds that FDA regulation of beverage labeling preempts additional labeling requirements under state law.
“High Fructose Corn Syrup can be labeled natural,” stated Audrae Erickson, president, Corn Refiners Association.
“HFCS contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives and meets FDA’s requirements for the use of the term ‘natural.’
HFCS, like table sugar and honey, is natural.
It is made from corn, a natural grain product.”
