Following a healthy lifestyle reduces risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, according to a report published in the Dec 2008 issue of Current Atherosclerosis Reports.
The report by Esposito K and colleagues from Second University of Naples in Napoli, Italy shows physical inactivity, unhealthy diet are likely to play an important role in the global epidemic of obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
The authors say a healthy lifestyle featured with an increase in physical activity, a reduction of body weight are the foundation for the prevention and treatment of both type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
According to the report, studies have showed that changes in lifestyle reduce risk of diabetes incidence by 42 to 63 percent. And similarly, intensive changes in lifestyle result in a reduction of 20 to 48 percent in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome.
The authors conclude that "Reduction of body weight, improvement of the quality of diet, and promotion of physical activity are the main approaches to prevent and treat patients with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome."
