WEDNESDAY NOV 21, 2007(Foodconsumer.org) -- Silibinin, a major active compound in milk thistle, may help effectively prevent liver cancer, according to a new study by Dr. Ke-Qin Hu from the University of California at Irvine, California and colleagues.
Milk thistle has been known to benefit the liver. And Dr. Hu has been studying viral hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis and liver cancer for years.
The study published in the Oct. 28, 2007 issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology showed silibilin can significantly reduce the growth of several human hepatoma cell lines.
In addition, the researchers demonstrated that sibibilin reduced cancer cell proliferation and cell cycle progression, enhanced programmed death of cancer cells, and altered chromatin structure of cancer cells.
