MONDAY APRIL 14, 2008 (foodconsumer.org) -- Barnard RJ published an article in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2007 Sep; 86(3): s889-93 saying that "adopting a low fat starch diet with daily exercise control metabolic syndrome (MS) and should reduce the risk of prostate cancer."

Barnard said in his report that earlier studies showed an inverse association between the level of insulin and the level of sex hormone-binding globulin or SHBG.

Barnard study showed that rodents on a low fat starch diet and daily exercise program had controlled metabolic syndrome, reduced levels of insulin and increased levels of SHBG meaning that MS has something to do with prostate cancer.

The diet and exercise program reduced insulin, estradiol, insulin-like growth factor-1 or IGF-1 and free testosterone while increasing SHBG and IGF binding protein-1.

Barnard suggested the low fat starch diet and daily exercise may lower risk of prostate cancer in humans.
