Saturday Sep 13 2008 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study reported in the Aug 19 2008 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine that patients suffering West Nile infection may need a year to recover.

The study conducted by Loeb M and colleagues from McMaster University in Ontario Canada showed patients restored their physical and mental function, as well as mood and fatigue, to normal within 1 year of symptom onset after West Nile infection.

For the study, the researchers analyzed data collected from 156 patients with West Nile virus infection during home visits and from ambulatory clinics in four provinces of Canada.   Patients were evaluated for physical and mental functions.

The researchers found patients with neuroinvasive disease took even longer to recover, but recovery and rates of recovery for complications, meningoencephalitis and encephalitis did not differ much.

The study did not include 7 cases of death from West Nile virus.
